Lopti’s almost finished armor! You can see the left pauldron isn’t totally weathered yet where the gold looks particularly bright, and I’m still working on a way to secure the dangly cyrstals - my favorite part - but here’s the basic thing. I have a nice chain for the belt that looks great, just need to get the hooks on. She’ll get the finished project on Sunday! Overall, really pleased. Love the centerpiece most. :)

OK, now that my sisters have seen the sabers and we’ve all exchanged over-the-top-excitement emails, here are the pictures of all 3 sabers. This is a longer post, kind of a product review.

We purchased them from ultrasabers, a site we knew was reliable because we’ve seen their products at conventions AND because we read a bunch of posts and reviews to determine what we wanted.

First off, mine is the red one (for my Sith Jasmine costume). I got the Phantom Initiate V3 with 32” blades. Now traditionally, a Jedi’s lightsaber is 36”. However, me and the sisters are short girls, and we didn’t want to look ridiculous wielding these long lightsabers. As it is, when my hilts are attached (they come with a coupler), it stands a good foot taller than me. Which is fine, proportion wise. I got a midgrade blade- it doesn’t glow quite like an ultraedge does, but I read that the ultraedge makes the red blades look more orange like, so I wanted the harsher light of the midgrade.

Second is the Artic Blue- belonging to Ageekeyweasley to go with her Jedi Kida costume. It’s so beautiful, the pics taken on my cell don’t do it justice. It’s a gorgeous icy blue color, and she got it in the 32” blade on the Initiate LE V2 with an ultraedge blade. It looks GORGEOUS- it glows like something straight out of the Atlantis movie. I want one.

Third is the Consular Green- Siffy’s to go with her Jedi Ariel costume. It’s a 32” blade on The Aeon hilt, which is a long and beautiful hilt. She also has an Ultraedge blade, and it looks spectacular. The green is so classic Jedi, I love it. And it will look perfect with her colors for Ariel’s costume.

All three of these are quite bright- they look awesome even in a well lit room. In a dark room, well… you can see that they basically light it up! The sabers also have a nice weight to them- not uncomfortably heavy, but with enough weight that if you want to whirl them around- the balance is nice. These are technically ‘spar ready’, but I doubt we’ll be doing any sparring until after D*C, just so that we don’t nick the blades up.

We didn’t get any of these with sound, which I know we’ll all miss. In fact, I was make the sound effects myself last night when I was running around (no shame!). And if we make a movie with them, we’ll certainly edit the sounds in. However, getting the sabers with sound adds quite a hefty amount to the price tag, so we went pretty standard with these. But we love them and pretty much exploded in excitement. I’ll be mailing the blue and green to my sisters this week, and feeling jealous that they will be together and no doubt get to play around with them and take some gorgeous pictures. But- Dragon*Con is coming, and then the sith/jedi sisters will be united!

You can call me a big nerd. You can say that lightsabers aren’t the best weapons (ahem, my boyfriend, who insists he prefers Vera). But you won’t say it to my face while I’m holding this FREAKING SWEET double bladed red lightsaber! Bwuahahah!

This is for my Sith Jasmine cosplay. I didn’t even change out of uniform when I got home because I knew this was waiting in a box for me. I just pulled it out, attached the hilts (it can be used as two sabers to double wield, ooOOooh), and ran around the house in excitement. And made my boyfriend take a picture.

I also received my sisters’ (Siffy and AgeekyWeasley) lightsabers, since we ordered them all together. I ran around with those too, but I won’t put up pictures until my sisters can see them first.

SQUEEE (how often do you hear a Soldier holding a lightsaber make that sound? I’m going with probably never.)

Simultaneously terrifying and awesome; that’s my big sister.

Embroidered details in Game of Thrones

‘Michele Carragher is a London-based Hand Embroiderer and Illustrator who has been working in costume on film and television productions for over 15 years. She studied Fashion Design at The London College of Fashion, where the course incorporated design, pattern cutting, garment construction, embroidery, millinery and illustration. At the same time she attended a three year evening course in Saddlery at Cordwainers College learning skills in leatherwork.

After leaving college Michele worked in Textile Conservation, repairing and restoring historical textiles for private collectors and museums, specialising in hand embroidery. She then moved into a career in costume for film and television, initially working as a Costume Assistant/Maker on productions such as the BBC’s Our Mutual Friend, ITV’s David Copperfield and Mansfield Park. She soon gravitated towards the decoration and embellishment of costumes, using skills in hand embroidery and surface decoration, taking inspiration from the many historical textiles she had encountered working as a Textile Conservator.

The first production that saw her undertake the role of a Principal Costume Embroiderer was for HBO’s 2005 Emmy Costume award-winning production of Elizabeth 1. Her most recent work has been on HBO’s 2012 Costume award-winning television series Game of Thrones, working on all three seasons.

As a Costume Embroiderer Michele specialises in hand embroidery and surface embellishment, using traditional hand embroidery techniques, smocking, beading and surface decoration. She works directly onto the completed garment or starts with motifs and textures on silk crepeline/organza, which are applied to the costume and then worked into once on the actual garment. She also works on existing machine embroidery designs that are not too dense, adding some hand stitching and beading to give a more authentic, hand-finished look.

Michele finds hand embroidery has more flexibility and diversity than that of embroidery created by machine, as there is a greater variety of thread choice and colours to use. It is also possible to work more easily on garments that are already constructed. However, machine embroidery in combination with hand work can be very useful when completing many repeats by creating light outlines or a less dense machine stitch, work can then be completed by hand and again can be carried out on a finished garment.

Michele is a highly creative Costume Embroiderer, producing original designs as well as working closely to a costume designer’s brief to create their desired look.’

She designs some of our gear, and always does a bang up job. If you can’t tell, the red shirt is everyone’s favorite theoretical physicist playing in a ball pit and yelling “Bazinga”.

Ohh that would indeed be fun. I think a nautolan would be a little above my skillset with prosthetics and whatnot, and beyond that, I’m not up on all my SW aquatic races (well. gungan.)…but if you have any ideas, I’d gladly take them. I’ve played with the idea of making her look more alien and feral, giving her some scales, but wasn’t going for a particular race so much as trying to tone down the princessy bit.

The cat’s out of the bag…Georgey, Won-Won, and myself are doing Disney princess jedis for D*C this year. Did this quick design sketch, trying to use Ariel’s color scheme and incorporate some of her elements (the “scales” on the boots, the shell bra look), while still keeping the jedi look. OK, cosplay progress update. First off, I’ve started work on the first Master Sword- not sure if this will be mine or Siffy’s. First I used some pics of Link to determine the scale and ratios for the sword for me and Siffy’s height (averaging it together), and created a template on the computer. Printed it out, and traced it onto press board and cardboard. Press board went in the middle, put cardboard on either side. Attached a dowel to the press board (attached it all with spray on adhesive), strengthened the connection with epoxy and hot glue. Cut out the outline for the hilt on cardboard, connected it to the blade/dowel, and covered that with expanding foam so I can carve it down to the right-ish size and shape of the hilt.

All of this will be covered with worbla… and hopefully that works, lol.

Other updates- got my wig in for my Thor cosplay (did I mention I’ve added that to the queue? I did. Thor’s armor from Dark World, gender bent). The wig is from Arda- the Matilda (lace front) in dark ash blonde). I’m in the process of sketching out the armor pattern. There’s no pepakura file for it out right now, that’d I’ve found, so it’ll be a scratch build.

And finally, working on my Jedi/Princess cosplay- I am going with Siffy and Ageekyweasley as Disney Princess + Jedi cosplay. I won’t give away my sisters’ plans, but I’m going as Jasmine- SITH Jasmine, bwuahaha. You can see a kind of concept sketch above. I just ordered my lightsaber this morning (red, staff version- like Darth Maul’s). Next will be buying fabric, woot!

Remember these things? It’s been a while. I was so unhappy with the initial resin and paint job on Lopti’s Zelda armor that I put a few more layers of resin on and have been working on sanding it ever since, first by hand, then with Georgey’s dremel. The metallic gold is just the paint I sprayed to see where the worst bumps were, and all that scuffing is where I sanded. Oh, and some parts are taped off. So yeah. I guess this isn’t much of a progress post. Hopefully finish these this weekend AT LASSTTTTTT. There’s my Toph bun up there too. Hate that thing. Hate wigs. I will never be good with hair, ever.

So, Siffy’s birthday is this week. She’s getting old. I made her a quiver.

I’m not sure why I didn’t take any WIP pictures. Possibly because I dove right into this and didn’t stop until it was done. First time making a quiver, leather or otherwise. The leather is HEAVY- 7-9 oz (great for holding real arrows when she goes to the range), and she can use it either for real life or for costumes. I bought veg tanned leather, cut it, dyed it, made that little pouch thingy, and either sewed or riveted the thing together. FYI, punching holes in heavy leather is hard on the hands. My palms were actually bruised.

Very happy with it over all, and when she first saw it, she assumed I bought it for her rather than made it by hand, so that’s a good sign :) Hopefully she’ll take some better pictures of it than the ones I took on my kitchen floor with my phone (since my oh so sweet dog, Thor- the dog of thunder- chewed my camera… long story).

This is my sweet baby quiver. Is it not gorgeous? I can’t wait to use this thing on the range. Thank you thank you thank you, Georgey!
